Here is a little bit more information about diamonds, where they come from, and their history.

The word diamond originally comes from the Greek word adamas, which has the meaning of unconquerable.

It may surprise you to know that a diamond is actually made of carbon, similar to graphite or charcoal. They are the hardest natural mineral known to man and can be polished very highly thanks to this hardness. On a scale of 1-10 the hardest natural material is the diamond, which scores 10, in terms of its natural resistance to scratching.

Diamonds can be found in and are mined in about 20 different countries including Russia, South Africa, Zaire and Australia. 80% of the diamonds that are mined are used for industrial purposes, whilst the other 20% are used as gemstones.

Most diamonds are formed between 87 to 120 miles under the earth and are brought nearer the surface by volcanic eruptions.

Gem diamonds are are much sought after because of the brilliant effect they give off as the white light is dispersed into spectral colours.

Diamonds can come in a variety of colours that include the traditional clear, yellow, pink, green and blue. You can even get black diamonds.

Now days diamonds and other gemstones are graded in quality according to the four c's - carot, clarity, cut and colour. Some people say that there is a fifth c - ensuring that any diamond has certification.

The first diamonds were thought to be found in India, where they have been known for at least 3,000 years and possibly as long as 6,000 years or more. They were used for decorative purposes, for protection during battle and to fend off evil.

Diamonds have remarkable optical characteristics. Because of their extremely rigid lattice, they can be contaminated by very few types of impurities, such as boron and nitrogen. Combined with wide transparency, this results in the clear, colorless appearance of most natural diamonds.

Small amounts of defects or impurities (about one per million of lattice atoms) color diamond blue (boron), yellow (nitrogen), brown (lattice defects), green (radiation exposure), purple, pink, orange or red. Diamonds also have relatively high optical dispersion (ability to disperse light of different colors), which results in its characteristic luster. Excellent optical and mechanical properties, combined with efficient marketing, make diamonds the most popular gemstone.

A diamond represents an eternal symbol of love and affection and has a an ever present role in marriage, particularly engagement. Every woman loves to have a diamond ring on their finger, to show the love and affection they share with their partner. Or why not try something different and buy her a diamond bracelet?

Let's start first by having a look at diamond rings.
